BUSTER WILLIAMS 75TH BIRTHDAY TOUR!!  (APRIL 17TH IS HIS BIRTHDAY)

Legendary bassist BUSTER WILLIAMS brings his All-Star Quartet to the Pollock Center - saxophonist STEVE WILSON, pianist GEORGE COLLIGAN, and drummer LENNY WHITE are featured in the group. Free parking at the Pollock Center - no food or drink available in this venue.

BUSTER WILLIAMS is a prodigious artist whose playing knows no limits. One of jazz's most valuable sidemen, Buster Williams has flourished through many periods of changing fashions in jazz. Best known since the 1980s for his solid, dark tone and highly refined technique on the acoustic bass, the jazz-rock generation knew him as the mobile anchor of Herbie Hancock's exploratory Mwandishi Sextet from 1969 to 1973. Buster has played, recorded and performed with jazz giants Art Blakey, Betty Carter, Jimmy Heth, Carmen McRae, Chet Baker, Chick Corea, Dexter Gordon, Erroll Garner, Wynton Marsalis, Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner, Nancy Wilson, Elvin Jones, Larry Coryell, Sonny Rollins & Miles Davis, to name a few. Born Anthony Williams, the son of a bassist, Buster began his career in the late 50’s and has gone on to be a member of some of the seminal groups in the history of jazz - Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi sextet, Sphere (a Monk tribute group with Charlie Rouse), The Great Jazz Trio (Hank Jones, Tony Williams & Buster), The Timeless All-Stars w/ Cedar Walton & Bobby Hutcherson & the Jazz Crusaders. He has been a frequent guest at CPFJ concerts through the years.

WHITE

LENNY WHITE  was born in New York City.  A self-taught drummer, he began his career in local groups, and was playing regularly with Jackie McLean in the late 1960s  .In 1969, he appeared on Miles Davis' historic recording on Bitches' Brew and later in 1970 he played with Freddie Hubbard on Red Clay before joining Corea's Return to Forever and Azteca in 1972. . For five years, he recorded a number of albums with Return to Forever including the award winning No Mystery and Romantic Warrior. When the group split up in 1977 White signed with the Nemperor label (via Atlantic) and recorded two albums as leader. White has played with a who's who of jazz including Jaco Pastorius, Joe Henderson, Woody Shaw, Gato Barbieri, Gil Evans, Stanley Clarke and Stan Getz among others. As a member of Return To Forever during 1973-76, White gained a strong reputation as one of the top fusion drummers, but he was always versatile enough to play in many settings.

JOHNNY O’NEAL TRIO

Tickets available by phone, or from our website.
FREE VALET PARKING!

Johnny O'Neal, born October 10, 1956 in Detroit, Michigan, is an American neo-bop jazz pianist and vocalist. His playing ranges from the technically virtuosic to the tenderest of ballad interpretations. Though unique in style, he is influenced by many jazz elders, including Oscar Peterson and Art Tatum. He has led many recording dates with jazz heavyweights such as Russell Malone and many others. He moved to New York City to perform with Clark Terry in 1981, and also landed a regular job at the Blue Note, accompanying such greats as Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Brown, Nancy Wilson, Joe Pass and Kenny Burrell. He was a member
of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers for two years from 1982-1983 and made his Carnegie Hall debut in 1985.

On the recommendation of Oscar Peterson, O'Neal portrayed Art Tatum in the 2004 movie Ray, convincingly recreating Tatum's sound on the song "Yesterdays". A 2006 DVD "Tight" captured O'Neal at the height of his powers. In an interview, pianist Mulgrew Miller said, "In my generation of musicians there are two artists who are probably the most naturally talented. They both happen to be from Detroit. One is Kenny Garrett, the saxophonist. The other is pianist Johnny O’Neal. There are so many outstanding things about Johnny’s playing. Number one, the touch. Johnny has a million dollar touch. Very few people touch the piano like that to get that kind of sound and feeling. The other thing is his feeling of swing, which is so natural. Then there’s Johnny’s personality, so engaging. And Johnny can play a ballad like few people, if any. I’ve always held his talent in the highest regard, and I think he’s a very special artist." Pianist and jazz luminary Barry Harris stated, “ Johnny is a very special cat - if ever somebody sounded like Art Tatum, it’s him - he’s got it all.” Noted saxophonist Lou Donaldson called Johnny, “the king of the piano”.

We hope you will come out and hear this wonderful artist in the unique Capitol Room at the Harrisburg Midtown Arts Center - food and drink will be available in the concert’s cabaret setting..

CHRISTIAN HOWES Southern Exposure
On Sunday, October 13 at 3:00 pm at The Allen Theater in Annville, CPFJ proudly presents Christian Howes and his group -              Southern Exposure.  Jazz violinist Christian Howes grew up in Columbus, Ohio, where he studied classically from the age of                         five, performing as a soloist with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra at age 16 and later receiving his bachelor's degree in                       Philosophy from the Ohio State University.  At age twenty, a “cultural intervention” occurred when Christian had the opportunity                           to perform at regular gospel church services and it became his mission to become a violinist with a strong voice in jazz.  Since his shift 21 years ago, he has gained great notoriety from critics and players alike as one of the world's most respected jazz violinists. Christian was a                                  favorite of the late guitar legend Les Paul, with whom he worked for 11 years.  An in-demand violinist on the New York scene, He collaborates with a bevy of top shelf jazz artists, including Greg Osby, Frank Vignola, Dafnis Prieto, Dave Samuels, Spyro Gyra, and a 4-year chair in Bill Evans' “Soulgrass” band.   In 2013, he was voted among the top three violinists in JazzTimes' 2012 Expanded Critics Poll.  In August 2011, Christian was ranked as the #1 “Rising Star” violinist in the Downbeat Critics Poll and was a nominee for the Jazz Journalists Association's “Violinist Of The Year”  in 2011. In 2012, he received the Residency Partnership from Chamber Music America for his work in outreach with orchestral education programs. He regularly tours throughout Asia, Europe, and the U.S. as a leader of his own groups and a soloist with orchestras. Says All About Jazz, ”as a jazz violinist he has no peer.” The Minneapolis Tribune called Christian “ arguably the most intriguing young violinist in j

TRIBUTE TO BRUBECK CONCERT SAT., JUNE 22ND - MESSIAH COLLEGE
CPFJ proudly announces a special concert in tribute to the memory of one of America's jazz icons - Dave Brubeck.
The pianist and composer who helped make jazz popular again in the 1950s and ’60s with recordings like “Time Out,” the first jazz album to sell a million copies, and “Take Five,” the still instantly recognizable hit single that was that album’s centerpiece, died in December, 2012, one day before his 92nd birthday. In his long career he became best known for his famous Quartet that featured drummer Joe Morello, bassist Eugene Wright, and alto saxophonist Paul Desmond.
We are thrilled to have our featured performer Cyrus Chestnut arranging a full evening of Brubeck's music that will feature the Jazz Camp's Faculty Ensemble - Jonathan Ragonese - sax,   Jeff Stabley - drums, and Steve Meashey - bass.  Video segments of the original Brubeck Quartet will also be shown.
The performance will be held in Parmer Hall in the High Center at Messiah College - a new facility that you really have to see to believe.  It is a beautiful new building and one of the best acoustical spaces for music on the East Coast.
Tom Weik, a long time CPFJ Corporate Member, suggested having this event and is underwriting the concert in memory of his father, Wilbur Z. Weik, who introduced Tom to jazz when he was a boy.

We will host a V.I.P. Meet the Artist reception following the concert - tickets are availabe in this issue of The ViBE.  Please join us in celebrating the life and career of this American original.
