The Central PA Friends of Jazz will return to Mt. Gretna's Playhouse again this year for the main 2017 Festival Concert - our special guest performer this year is DELFEAYO MARSALIS!

Our 37th Annual Festival Concert will be held at the beautiful Mt. Gretna Playhouse again this year and features one of the most prominent names in the jazz world - trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis.   He will bring an all-star quartet that features rising star pianist Richard Johnson to perform at 7:30 p.m. This concert is a joint production of the Central PA Friends of Jazz and Gretna Music.

Trombonist, composer, and producer Delfeayo Marsalis is a highly regarded jazz performer and a member of the famed Marsalis family. Born in New Orleans in 1965 to esteemed jazz pianist and professor Ellis Marsalis, Jr.,Delfeayo grew up alongside his five siblings including saxophonist Branford Marsalis, trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, and drummer Jason Marsalis. As a teenager, he attended the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, the Eastern Music Festival, and the Tanglewood Institute, during which time he studied classical music and jazz.  After high school, he majored in both performance and audio production at the Berklee College of Music. Marsalis also holds a master's degree in Jazz Performance from the University of Louisville and was conferred a doctorate by New England College.  As a performer, the trombonist gained experience touring with luminaries Ray Charles, Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, and pianist Abdullah Ibrahim. He also has an extensive list of producer credits, having helmed recordings with his brothers Branford and Wynton as well as albums by Harry Connick, Jr., Donald Harrison, Marcus Roberts, and others. As a solo recording artist, he debuted in 1992 with the Biblically inspired Pontius Pilate's Decision followed with Musashi in 1997. His Elvin Jones tribute album Minions Dominion was released in 2006. Sweet Thunder, a reworking of Duke Ellington's suite incorporating Shakespearean themes, appeared in 2010. In 2014, Marsalis paired with his father, Ellis, for the urbane, standards-heavy The Last Southern Gentlemen. Two years later, he delivered the politically minded Make America Great Again!, which showcased the debut of his large ensemble the Uptown Jazz Orchestra.

The Mt. Gretna Playhouse is an open air/covered roof venue, so dress casually and come enjoy the evening's music. Tickets will be available at the door, but we recommend ordering in advance at www.friendsofjazz.org, calling the CPFJ Office 717-540-1010 or Gretna Music (717) 361-1508.

2PM - our CPFJ Youth Band directed by Ron Waters performs. Composed of students aged 8-18 from various area schools, the Youth Band is a group of like-minded music students who are interested in improvisation. 5:45 PM - Erin Cruise with the Steve Rudolph Trio - vocalist Erin Cruise is known in the area mostly as the leader of the rock/party band Cruise Control, but she can deliver the goods in the jazz world as well and will be the perfect closer for this wonderful day of music.
