Lee Smith Sextet - "Sittin' on a Secret" (9pm)
Legendary Philadelphia bassist Lee Smith recently released a new CD, ” Sittin' on a Secret”, and he brings the strong voices from his recording ensemble to the Gretna Playhouse – Marc Adler (flute), Tim Thompson (trumpet), Tim Warfield (sax), Joshua Richmond (piano), and Justin Faulkner (drums - you may remember Justin as our guest at last year’s Festival jam session). Early in his career, Lee was bassist for R&B artists Billy Paul and the Delphonics. He then toured for five years with Mongo Santamaria and since that time he has performed with Lionel Hampton, Dizzy Gillespie and Roberta Flack as well as his own ensembles. Lee is also known as a great teacher, having schooled his son - jazz star bass player Christian McBride.
Hendrik Meurkens' Samba Jazz Quartet (7:30pm)
New York based Hendrik Meurkens, a harmonica and vibraphone virtuoso, will appear with his New York Samba Jazz Quartet that features Russian pianist Misha Tsiganov and Brazilian musicians Gustavo Amarante – bass & Adriano Santos - drums. Hendrik has been a frequent visitor to Central PA in the last 15 years and is known world wide as a true master of his instruments. He lived in Brazil for several years, absorbing the music and culture of that unique civilization. After moving back to Germany and establishing himself as the “new jazz harmonica voice”, he made the move to New York, thanks to an exclusive contract with the prestigious label, Concord Records. He has since recorded fifteen albums, and continues to perform as both a guest artist, and with his own groups, in festivals and clubs globally. We are thrilled to have all of these wonderful artists performing at the closing concert of our 34th annual Central PA Jazz Festival.
